Rode podmic9/26/2023 ![]() ![]() How we tested the Rode PodMicįor the past two weeks, I've used the Rode Podmic on a near-daily basis to talk with friends, have conference calls with my colleagues, track vocals for a new album I've been working on, and record commentary tracks for VOD content. You just don't see such well-constructed microphones from premium brands with these features at under $100, meaning you can get great sound without breaking the bank here. Whether you're intending on becoming a streamer for the likes of Twitch or YouTube Gaming, or you've got your sights set on podcasting to a professional standard, the Rode PodMic is an easy recommendation for the money. Keep in mind, though, that you'll need to shell out a little extra for a decent stand or boom arm to get the most out of this model, but I think this microphone more than justifies that extra cost at a very competitive rate. ![]() (Image credit: Rode) Should you buy the Rode PodMic?įor $99, the Rode PodMic is one of the best value propositions you can get right now, especially when compared to the likes of the far more expensive Shure MV7 ($250 MSRP) while offering similar performance. If you're after a microphone that can do it all to a professional standard then this model certainly lives up to expectations. In my testing, I've found that this model was easily able to track both clean and harsh singing with only slight adjustments needed in the gain settings to prevent clipping. While the Rode PodMic is certainly best suited to podcasting and streaming, it's also proved formidable for recording vocals, too. The responsiveness of the Rode PodMic is very precise, which meant that I was able to comfortably talk at a regular level without feeling the urge to speak louder to pick up properly, a problem that I've had with some USB microphones I've used in the past. Whether it was my tried-and-true Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD, my previous daily-driver audio interface for streaming and recording music, or the brand's recently released RodeCaster Pro II, nothing has come close to matching the sound quality on offer here. This is due to its dynamic cardioid nature, which has a frequency range between 20Hz and 20kHz, meaning it can be easily fine-tuned through your audio interface of choice for optimum output settings. Whether I've tasked the microphone with live streams, recording music, or tracking commentary tracks for VOD content, the accuracy and clarity that comes out of this punchy piece of kit cannot be overstated. Simply put, the Rode PodMic is the best-sounding microphone I've ever used. The other friend, who was about 10 feet away, had his voice go in and out because of the noise gate.(Image credit: Future / Aleksha McLoughlin) Performance One of my friends, who was about 3-4 feet away from the mic, still sounded great on the mic. While I was about a foot away from my mic, my friends were a bit more distant. ![]() However, erven with the noise gate and surrounding annoyances, the mic picked up my voice perfectly, with no background static. I erroneously left on the noise gate for both of our mics, which was significant because of my friends’ distance from their mics, as well as a neighbor who was cutting his grass. ![]() I recently recorded a podcast with a couple of friends using a couple of PodMics. Part of the features advertised with the PodMic are its “broadcast-quality dynamic capsule” and “internal pop filter to (minimize) plosive,” along with the mic’s specific dedication to “speech applications.” As someone who has done podcasting for over five years, I was thoroughly impressed with the sound and range of the PodMic. Putting it mildly, this the Rode PodMic is the real deal. With that said, if you are looking to set up multiple mics, you can’t beat $99 a pop for each setup - though a stand isn't included in the box, so put aside another $20-30 per mic. The Rode PodMic is available for $99, an absolute steal for such a high-quality mic and just the right price point for beginners. Rode PodMic review: Price and availability Our picks of the best computer speakers. The best headphones with a mic for voice and video calls. It’s no plug-and-play USB model, then, but the PodMic is one of both the best microphones and the best podcasting microphones you can buy today. You’re probably wondering - what does that have to do with a small desktop microphone? Well, after using plug-and-play mics for most of my podcasting career, the PodMic was a welcome return back to smooth-sounding (and sultry-looking) mics with XLR cords and soundboards. ![]()
